Secondly, it is not the responsibility of the government to create an environment where there is incentive for more and more people to become entrepreneurs.

BSY trains sights on Gowda flock

SANJAY K. JHA

BJP leaders said despite breaching the southern barrier, the party was dogged by a sense of insecurity as it had not won a simple majority on its own.

New Delhi, June 6: The BJP, buoyed by the trust vote victory in Karnataka today, has decided to play a new game: split H.D. Deve Gowda's flock and beef up its bench strength.

The party had fallen short of three seats in the House of 224 and had to seek the support of six Independents to make the magic number. Five of them have been made ministers but the BJP is not confident about how committed they are.

Real Thought for Food for Long Workouts

DR. MARK TARNOPOLSKY, a muscle physiology researcher at McMaster University in Canada and a physician, knows all about the exhortations by supplement makers and many nutritionists on what to eat and when to eat it for optimal performance.

The idea is that you are supposed to consume carbohydrates and proteins in a magical four-to-one ratio during endurance events like a long run or bike ride, and right after. The belief is that such nutritional diligence will improve your performance and speed your recovery.

Teen Refused Chemo, Beat Cancer With 'Alternative' Therapies

Friday, June 06, 2008

FLOYD, Va. —  Starchild Abraham Cherrix has plenty of reason to celebrate his 18th birthday Friday.

His case led to a state law named after him that gives Virginia teenagers and their parents the right to refuse doctor-recommended treatments for life-threatening ailments.

Cherrix completed radiation treatments last year. He has also used alternative herbal treatments.

His latest blood results show no indication of the Hodgkin's disease he's battled since 2005, and for the first time in two years he doesn't have to report those results to the Accomack County court.

Contra Costa woman contracts salmonella linked to outbreak in other states

By Roman Gokhman
Contra Costa Times

WALNUT CREEK — A Contra Costa County woman has been identified as having the same type of salmonella connected to an outbreak in several other states.

The California Department of Public Health confirmed Friday that the woman had salmonella saintpaul, an uncommon strain that has been linked to raw tomatoes. The woman, who is older than 35, was not hospitalized and has recovered, Contra Costa Health Services spokeswoman Kate Fowlie said.

It is the first reported case involving a California resident. The strain is the same type of salmonella that has sickened 57 people in New Mexico, Texas and several other states, and 17 of those cases have included hospitalizations, officials said. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in the very young and elderly.

RITES eyes opportunities in South Africa (Lead)

By Fakir Hassen
Johannesburg, June 6 (IANS) RITES Ltd, the consultancy arm of the Indian Railways, is in talks with South African railway authorities to develop tailor-made solutions for their requirements, a senior RITES official said. "We have been in exploratory talks with them in certain areas," Sumit Sinha, executive director of RITES' expotech division, told IANS Friday on the sidelines of the three-day annual Africa Rail conference here.

"We have come to South Africa to renew our contacts and explore new opportunities here," he said. "We can have a win-win situation for both (South African company) Transnet and RITES."

RITES' move comes even as Lucky Montana, South African Rail Commuters Corporation chief executive, said local passenger train services would collapse soon if there was no government investment.

Cardiac care goes on rails

BS Reporter / Chennai/ Bangalore June 07, 2008, 3:38 IST

Well, that could be a reality if consumer appliances manufacturer BPL Limited succeeds in clinching a deal with the Indian Railways to install defibrillators — equipment that delivers a safe level of energy output required to revive a person who has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest — on trains in the country.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, BPL Healthcare COO A Vijay Simha said, "We are holding discussions with the chief medical officer of the Railways in New Delhi. These defibrillators are ideal for installation on trains as well as railway stations as they can save many lives that are lost because of lack of timely intervention in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest."
