Man throws child onto freeway

Crime
A man reportedly threw a toddler to his death from a freeway bridge in Honolulu at around noon today. Police already have a suspect in custody. A breaking news itemfrom The Honolulu Advertiser says witnesses saw a man, dressed in what looked like hospital scrubs that were cutoff at the knee, throw the child from the pedestrian bridge at Miller Street. A camera crew from KITV captured footage of the 23-year-old suspect as he was taken away, and he reportedly called out, "Thank you for everything!"

The child has not been identified, and it is unknown whether the boy was related in any way to the suspect. Police are checking local day care facilities in the area to see if anyone is missing a child, KITV noted

Nanotechnology - Carbon Nanotubes Can Be 'Like Asbestos' To Lungs

Discovered nearly 20 years ago, carbon nanotubes have been described as the wonder material of the 21st Century. Light as plastic and stronger that steel, they are being developed for use in new drugs, energy-efficient batteries and futuristic electronics.

A major study published today suggests some forms of carbon nanotubes, the poster children for the 'nanotechnology revolution', could be as harmful as asbestos if inhaled in sufficient quantities.

Global Seed Vault provides optimal conditions

Staff from the Nordic Genetic Resource Centre (NordGen) have now moved the Nordic countries' safety seed collection from a mine to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Since 1984 NordGen has stored duplicates of the Nordic countries' seed collection (former Nordic Genebank) in an abandoned coalmine just outside Longyearbyen. The seeds were originally stored in sealed glass vials placed in wooden boxes, stacked inside a metal container. The permafrost ensured good storage conditions at approximately -4°C.

Most Americans do not even think about getting information from alternative news sources

Source: Pravda.Ru

23.05.2008

The US most popular TV channel Fox News has been beaten by CNN for the first time during the last seven years. Preferences of US citizens were affected by the media reporting of the election campaign and the country's foreign policy. Twelve million TV viewers preferred the 'objective' CNN to Fox News that justifies George Bush's policy.

In April 2008 the CNN audience counted 62 million people, while Fox News had only 50 million TV viewers, Handelsblatt reports. According to US media experts, the reason for this change is the information policy run by the competing TV channels. "CNN has beaten all the TV channels by the quality of its programs concerning the elections," said Joe Cuthbert, a professor of the Department of Journalism of the Columbia University in the City of New York.

Kallang, Paya Lebar to be developed as new commercial hubs
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia Posted: 23 May 2008 2029 hrs

Singapore News

SINGAPORE : Kallang and Paya Lebar will be developed into new commercial hubs, just like the Jurong Lake District. This is part of the government's Draft Master Plan, which charts land use over the next 10 to 15 years.

Marina Bay and the city centre will continue to be the key commercial node in Singapore. New growth areas like Tanjong Pagar, Beach Road and the Ophir-Rochor corridor will also be developed.

However, more commercial hubs will be needed outside the city, to offer alternatives to businesses and bring jobs closer to homes.

Beach-lovers' sunscreens damage reefs

From correspondents in Paris

May 24, 2008 12:05am

  • Sunscreen lotion causes coral bleaching

  • Effects can be seen within days

  • Tonnes of sunscreen released into reefs each year

  • SUNSCREEN lotions used by beach-going tourists worldwide are a major cause of coral bleaching, according to a new study commissioned by the European Commission.

In experiments, the cream-based ultra-violet (UV) filters - used to protect skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure - caused bleaching of coral reefs even in small quantities, the study found.
Coral reefs are among the most biologically productive and diverse of ecosystems, and directly sustain half a billion people. But some 60 per cent of these reef systems are threatened by a deadly combination of climate change, industrial pollution and excess UV radiation.

Home sales rebound in Silicon Valley

LOWER PRICES ATTRACT BUYERS AFTER MONTHS OF RECORD-LOW FIGURES

Article Launched: 05/21/2008 01:31:33 AM PDT

Finally, a glimmer of good news for Silicon Valley home sellers: Home sales were up 30 percent last month compared with March.

That was the steepest March-to-April increase in almost two decades for the county, according to DataQuick Information Systems, and it came after several months of record-low sales figures.

"You've finally hit a price point that is attracting people back into the market," said David Martz, an agent with Intero Real Estate. In San Jose's Alum Rock neighborhood, for example, homes priced at $350,000 or $400,000 are selling, while in the Rose Garden neighborhood, a bargain could mean finding a home in the high $600,000 range, he said. "There are some great deals available."
