CORRALITOS, CALIF. -- A raging wildfire has destroyed a handful of structures in the Santa Cruz Mountains, closing schools and prompting some evacuations, officials said.

The wind-driven blaze, first reported about 5:30 a.m., had burned through more than 3,000 acres by 12:30 p.m. and was out of control, according to Guy Martin, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Taking consumer-driven medicine to new depths

Maggie Mahar and Niko Karvounis on the HealthBeatblog.org write about direct-to-consumer ads taking "consumer driven medicine" to "absurd heights." Or depths. Excerpts:

"In a piece titled "Crossing the Line in Consumer Education?" that will appear in the May 22 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Drs. William E. Boden, and George A. Diamond tackle the issue, arguing that a new campaign to peddle medical devices directly to patients warrants close scrutiny. Manufacturers are inviting consumers to decide not only what is best for them, but what is best for their surgeons. This is "consumer-driven medicine" at its most dangerous.

Qld Govt accused of Mt Isa lead 'cover-up'

2 hours 47 minutes ago

The Queensland Government has been accused of trying to play down health concerns involving children at Mount Isa.

The report followed fears about contamination from Xstrata operations.

A new report has confirmed that 11 per cent of the 400 children who were tested in the north-west Queensland mining town have high levels of lead in their blood.

But Queensland Health concedes the exact source of the lead has not been determined.

Study Finds Big Social Factor in Quitting Smoking

Published: May 22, 2008

For years, smokers have been exhorted to take the initiative and quit: use a nicotine patch, chew nicotine gum, take a prescription medication that can help, call a help line, just say no. But a new study finds that stopping is seldom an individual decision.

Smokers tend to quit in groups, the study finds, which means smoking cessation programs should work best if they focus on groups rather than individuals. It also means that people may help many more than just themselves by quitting: quitting can have a ripple effect prompting an entire social network to break the habit.

Bonifacio Torres enjoys a cigarette alone in New York, but many smokers find they give up smoking as part of a group.

Beer Drinking May Speed Pancreatic Cancer Onset

By Kathleen Doheny, HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay News) -- Heavy smoking and drinking, especially beer, may hasten the onset of pancreatic cancer, according to researchers who presented their data Tuesday at the Digestive Disease Week 2008 conference in San Diego.

Beer appears to exert a stronger influence than hard liquor or wine in lowering the age of onset of pancreatic cancer, said researcher Dr. Michelle A. Anderson, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan.

Anderson and her colleagues evaluated patients from The Pancreatic Cancer Collaborative Registry, a multi-center, international patient registry, looking at whether the patients drank or smoked, and if so, how much and what type of liquor.

Researchers said it may be the first recorded occurrence of its kind in the United States, although similar behavior has been witnessed in British Columbia, Argentina and islands in the Indian Ocean.

A dozen or more people reported witnessing one of the world's rarest wildlife phenomena when an orca rode a wave onto Indian Beach in Trinidad and seized a seal.

Such behavior is rare among orcas. Washington-based Orca Network Director Howard Garrett was surprised to hear of the sighting and said the research community is very interested.

Paining legs

Digg!

The Americans never walk. In winter too cold and in summer too hot.—J.B.

Leg pain is a normal occurrence and on many occasions little care is needed and one gets relief without any medication; standing for long, sitting with legs cramped or hanging down, walking and doing exercises are a few. The last one may be a cause particularly in the days when you start doing the exercises and would disappear as you make exercising a habit.
