Mosquito invasion brings disease risk to UK
Monday, 26 May 2008
The Asian tiger mosquito has already established itself in northern Italy where it has transmitted chikungunya fever to scores of people. The insect has also been detected in a dozen other European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands.
Health experts are concerned that Britain could be the next country to be invaded after scientists at the Government's Health Protection Agency (HPA) at Porton Down in Wiltshire found that the UK climate is suitable for the mosquito to breed.

A new daytime facility for elderly residents suffering from dementia in Omuta, Japan will be named after a Danish nurse, Mirjam Gade, who has assisted putting the project together.
'Dementia, like other mental illnesses, has been taboo in Japan, and elderly suffering from the sickness have been hidden away in hospitals or looked after by family members,' said Gade, who is a nurse in an elderly psychiatric care unit in southern Denmark.
The new centre will primarily act as a respite facility during the day for elderly people with dementia.

Lewis Hamilton on top of the world again
Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and McLaren Mercedes celebrates victory in the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton drove beautifully in treacherous conditions on a wet and dramatic day in Monte Carlo to win the sixth grand prix of his career yesterday and to vault into the lead in the drivers' world championship ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who finished outside the points.
Winning in Monaco in the rain was always going to take more than just sublime skills at the wheel of a superpowerful car on the narrowest of tracks, where visibility and grip are reduced to a level that makes just getting round in one piece extremely difficult.

At more than 700 pounds each, Butch, Howie and Phoenix - the three sea lion bulls at the Queens Zoo - have no trouble putting away about 24 pounds of fish a day.
This fact was less than appetizing to 7-year-old Alex Warren, who watched the three behemoths at their morning feeding this week.
Queens Zoo visitors will be able to learn more about sea lions' insatiable appetite with zookeeper chats.
"I'm allergic to fish," said Alex as he munched on a sandwich with pal Nakai Padgett, 6, just a few feet from the sea lion exhibit. However, he added: "I like the noises they [the sea lions] make."
