Gene-Hunters Find Hope and Hurdles in Schizophrenia Studies

Two groups of researchers hunting for schizophrenia genes on a larger scale than ever before have found new genetic variants that point toward a different understanding of the disease.

"What is beginning to emerge is that a lot of the risk of brain diseases is conferred by rare deletions," Dr. Stefansson said.

"If you can understand the mechanism," Dr. Insel said, "you should be able to devise new treatments. So I think this is a big advance, not a signal for hopelessness."

Cooking Without Walls

Published: August 1, 2008

ENTERTAINING is often the main reason for having a weekend or vacation home, and for many people that all but requires outdoor cooking.

Where will the kitchen be built? If it's to be on a wooden deck, you need to be sure that the deck can support the weight of heavy appliances and counters, and you have to commit to maintaining the wood surfaces and checking for signs of sagging. If it's to be on a stone or concrete patio, the patio must be pitched enough to let water drain off but level enough for counters and appliances.

What kind of countertop? Concrete and stone make great countertops, but they might require professional installation.

Stanford researchers find hair growth trigger

By Vianna Davila
Mercury News

Stanford University researchers have pinpointed a molecule that triggers hair follicle growth in mice, a treatment that one day could eventually mean some shaggy dos, or at least a few more strands, for humans who have experienced hair loss.

"Loss of hair is not going to kill anybody," said Dr. Peter Marinkovich, the study's senior author and an associate professor at Stanford University's School of Medicine. "At the same time, for some people, hair loss can be a really traumatic thing, especially for women."

Marinkovich said his team hopes to repeat the tests on animals treated with chemotherapy and later on human subjects.

The findings are "important in the long run," Cotsarelis said, calling the Stanford study, "one of the initial steps."

Gardeners: Are you in the quarantine zone?

Summer gardens are heading into their peak producing weeks, and it's a time-honored rite of the season to share and swap the bounty with neighbors, friends, family and co-workers.

But before you load up that basket of fresh-picked tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, and before you cut a bouquet of flowers to take to your mom, check out the latest version of the county's light brown apple moth quarantine map. Lines have recently been redrawn to include even more of Santa Clara County in an effort to curb the spread of this relatively new and voracious pest.

Just not now. Not if you live in the zone.

A hole new way to garden

presto_img_groundwork.jpgHere's a new tool you might want to check out — especially if your gardening plans include lots of repetitive digging to install masses of cheery fall annuals or bulbs for a nice display next spring.

Jack Reiter is a Minnesota inventor who came up with the PrestoPlanter out of frustration while working in tough, root-bound soil. Reiter is quoted on the company's Web site,
www.prestoplanter.com, saying: "This will allow gardeners of all ages and abilities to easily dig perfect holes and get to the fun part of gardening, the planting."

AIDS deaths down 10% in 2007

New infections in children also declined, a U.N. report says. Greater access to treatment is cited.

By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
July 30, 2008

The number of AIDS deaths worldwide dropped 10% in 2007 because of increasing access to treatment, as did the number of new infections in children, the United Nations reported Tuesday.

Condom use and prevention efforts increased in many countries and adolescent sexual intercourse declined in some of the most heavily affected regions, the report says.

NASA says at least one lake-like feature on Saturn moon Titan is liquid hydrocarbon

By Associated Press

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ At least one of many large, lake-like features on Saturn's moon Titan studied by the international Cassini spacecraft contains liquid hydrocarbons, making it the only body in the solar system besides Earth known to have liquid on its surface, NASA said Wednesday.

Scientists positively identified the presence of ethane, according to a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which manages the Cassini mission exploring Saturn, its rings and moons

Stress in a man may may make dangerous to the society.

Stress may affect us temporarily or permanently. It depends on how deep a person gets involved emotionally.

Dispossession, (to live without the use of things which we think we can not do without) is one way of training ourselves to be dispassionate and ready to meet adverse conditions.

But Stress is basically an emotion and ambition related problem. Everyone gets into stress now and then. So there is no escape from getting stressed. The escape lies with our attitude. Avoid the seven sins and one can live happily

We have no right to ask when sorrow comes, "Why did this happen to me?" unless we ask the same question for every moment of happiness that comes our way. —Unknown

10 Ways to Green Your Home

Just because you're concerned about climate change doesn't mean you have to live in a yurt in outer Mongolia. All it takes are a few smart, fuss-free choices to make the change you wish to see in the world, while rejuvenating your body, home, and planet at the same time. Choosing green might even save you some green in the process. Our list is by no means exhaustive, but it's a righteous start. -Jasmin Malik Chua
