Produce picks: Potatoes

Potatoes
Potato prices are at some of the highest levels in years. It all began almost a year ago when the Pacific Northwest, the source of most of our spuds, experienced record high temperatures in August. During that last month of growth, potatoes gain as much as 50 percent of their size and weight. The heat wave stunted growth and resulted in many misshapen potatoes, reducing the size of the crop that could be sent to supermarkets. That's why we're seeing potato prices about $1.29 per pound when they usually would run about 69 cents per pound. Prices are not expected to drop when the new crop begins, however, because 7 to 9 percent fewer acres were planted with potatoes this year. California already is harvesting its new crop of russets and the Northwest should start in late August. Even at these higher prices, the potato is one of the cheapest vegetables by the pound.

Earn lying down
Sleeping may earn you $10 per hr
Sat, Aug 2 12:05 PM
Washington, August 2 (ANI): It's no more necessary to get up early in the morning and get ready for work, for NASA is paying people just to sleep.
"It's very relaxing at times. This is probably the most I've sat still in 10 years," foxnews.com quoted Heather Archuletta, a study participant, as saying. (ANI)
NASA's Flight Analog Research Unit says one way to recreate such conditions on the ground is for test participants to lie down with head slightly tilted back for 90 days.
They spend three months lying down, and the preparation and rehabilitation take up another month.

Schizophrenia
Two groups of researchers hunting for schizophrenia genes on a larger scale than ever before have found new genetic variants that point toward a different understanding of the disease.
"If you can understand the mechanism," Dr. Insel said, "you should be able to devise new treatments. So I think this is a big advance, not a signal for hopelessness."

ENTERTAINING is often the main reason for having a weekend or vacation home, and for many people that all but requires outdoor cooking.
Where will the kitchen be built? If it's to be on a wooden deck, you need to be sure that the deck can support the weight of heavy appliances and counters, and you have to commit to maintaining the wood surfaces and checking for signs of sagging. If it's to be on a stone or concrete patio, the patio must be pitched enough to let water drain off but level enough for counters and appliances.
What kind of countertop? Concrete and stone make great countertops, but they might require professional installation.

Stanford researchers find hair growth trigger
Mercury News
Stanford University researchers have pinpointed a molecule that triggers hair follicle growth in mice, a treatment that one day could eventually mean some shaggy dos, or at least a few more strands, for humans who have experienced hair loss.
"Loss of hair is not going to kill anybody," said Dr. Peter Marinkovich, the study's senior author and an associate professor at Stanford University's School of Medicine. "At the same time, for some people, hair loss can be a really traumatic thing, especially for women."
Marinkovich said his team hopes to repeat the tests on animals treated with chemotherapy and later on human subjects.
The findings are "important in the long run," Cotsarelis said, calling the Stanford study, "one of the initial steps."

Gardeners: Are you in the quarantine zone?
Summer gardens are heading into their peak producing weeks, and it's a time-honored rite of the season to share and swap the bounty with neighbors, friends, family and co-workers.
But before you load up that basket of fresh-picked tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, and before you cut a bouquet of flowers to take to your mom, check out the latest version of the county's light brown apple moth quarantine map. Lines have recently been redrawn to include even more of Santa Clara County in an effort to curb the spread of this relatively new and voracious pest.

A hole new way to garden

Here's a new tool you might want to check out — especially if your gardening plans include lots of repetitive digging to install masses of cheery fall annuals or bulbs for a nice display next spring.
Jack Reiter is a Minnesota inventor who came up with the PrestoPlanter out of frustration while working in tough, root-bound soil. Reiter is quoted on the company's Web site,
www.prestoplanter.com, saying: "This will allow gardeners of all ages and abilities to easily dig perfect holes and get to the fun part of gardening, the planting."

Learn home green techniques
10 Ways to Green Your Home
Just because you're concerned about climate change doesn't mean you have to live in a yurt in outer Mongolia. You can be passionate about the environment, without strapping yourself to a whaling ship or using yourself as a human shield against bulldozers that mow down old-growth trees. All it takes are a few smart, fuss-free choices to make the change you wish to see in the world, while rejuvenating your body, home, and planet at the same time. Choosing green might even save you some green in the process. Our list is by no means exhaustive, but it's a righteous start. -Jasmin Malik Chua
