OTTAWA - Two Canadian companies were named Tuesday in the largest telemarketing fraud sweep ever co-ordinated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, for allegedly bilking American consumers with promises of bogus medical discount packages.
The agency singled out Med Provisions and Union Consumer Benefits, both based in Montreal, in its announcement of legal actions in U.S. federal court against 13 companies through its "Operation Tele-PHONEY." The commission alleges more than 500,000 American consumers were defrauded by 13 "unscrupulous telemarketers," resulting in the loss of more than $100 million.
